Default Build my new rig!

So I'm a dork at heart I guess...Or a cheap ass...Don't know. I had a 6 year old Pentium 4 Sony Vaio that was getting sluggish when I loaded Windows 7 on it so I decided it was time to upgrade. Not seeing anything I wanted from the big computer retailers and the fact it would have crap that I didn't want, I decided to head to Tiger Direct and get some crap that I could use and wanted. I'm not a gamer and this is just the family PC that should last the next few years for us around the house but it seems rock solid so far.

Ultra X-blaster mid tower case w/ blue 120mm exhaust fan
Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H motherboard
AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor
4GB DDR2 800MHz ram
(Reused) [2] 1TB HDD
OCZ Stealth X Stream 700w power supply
Raedon HD 4650 1GB video card
Samsung 24x DVD-RW
(Reused) Windows 7 Ultimate

All in all, the build went good except that Windows didn't like the change from an Intel based chip to an AMD based chip so I had to reload even though I did yank out all of the old drivers. I tried repair after repair and had the old box set up just for that instance to pull shit off but it still didn't like it but hell, got a clean install out of it and pulled stuff from backups.

The CPU runs cool as anything and the cores aren't stressed at all for what I'm using it for so it should be around just as long as the Vaio is. Maybe the Vaio will now serve as a Linux box. Who knows.

are you gaming? what did this build cost you?

I believe when you change processors, you HAVE to do a clean install of Windows 7. Even if you stay within the same family of processors....

No...Not gaming. Just the home PC for the family. My P4 lasted me 6 years so I was content with that. My last build I did was for my mom and it went really well with an AMD. I spent the last month looking at the AMD quad core reviews versus the I5's and there was NO WAY I was dropping the loot on the I7. All said and done I spent around $500 after using my old HDD and such which I am MORE than pleased about. The off-the-shelf stuff just didn't appeal to me plus there is all of that "extra" crap that you get loaded on the machine....I guess I saved around $400 compared to a comprable system...Maybe more.

As for as reloading...I kind of figured that but I read a few places where some people said that they "just booted and Windows did the Windows Repair and all was good." I was tossed into a boot loop.
