Default Track day questions...

You knew it was coming since I got the new scoot....

The main reason I got a new sportbike in ADDITION to my Harley is because I miss going fast, but there are those things like laws and other people that prevent a full on adrenaline rush...unless you run from the law or hit one of those people.

The secondary reason was because I am 30 so not quite a midlife crisis like MotoPhil but more like a 1/3rd life crisis. So I'm browsing a few sites today and need me some schoolin...

Obviously the basics:
~$600 for a 1 piece suit
~$300 for a nice pair of boots
~$200 for a nice pair of gloves

Around $1100 for gear....I have that part down.

At the track...Anyone ever ride there? Does everyone trailer? MUST YOU RUN RACE TIRES? How much blue tape do I need? Annnndddd....The big one....Obviously in a beginners run here since my balls haven't completely dropped yet, Butttttt.....How many people take their NON-TRACK bike out and how many let it go?!?! I would just curl up in a ball if I had a pile of plastic and metal just to try to go have fun.

Figured I would ask as I am sure some other folks may want to know some answers too. Oh, and I wanna run the H-D out there too!

Some do ride there, but it's much better trailering it there. You'll know what I mean when you go home. No, you dont need to run slicks. In the beginning of your track career, you wont even come close to their potential. As time goes by, you may need to, but early on no. I am only a 3 time trackday person. I use and love my street DOT Dunlop Qualifier's. They work awesome! I have a non-trackbike and boy do I make it GO! The conversion process is simple- just tape your headlights, taillights and turn siganls. Disconnect your headlight bulbs and taillight bulbs, tape up your wheel weights, zip-tie your kickstand or remove it. Drop your tie pressures to 30 psi each. Yes the worry of my beauty is damaging it but I dont have the flow yet to get my race-bike...yet. That woud be badass to see you track your Harley. But since it would be slow, make sure you stay with it in Novice, even if your skills get better. I won't make the May 10th trackday cuz it's Mother's Day, but I will be there for the next Homestead one on June 21st and for Jennings on July 18th and 19th. Look forward to seeing out there for either.

Definately trailer it. You'll be exhausted by the end of the day and if you have a mishap, you're stuck there with no bike to get home on. One roll of tape should be enough to cover lights on a few bikes. You can get a leathers for alot cheaper, around $350-400 if you shop for something good like Joe Rocket or Teknic. Check newenough.com kneedraggers.com and just do a google search. As far as tires, you won't need slicks for a LONG time. But the tires you do run should have at least 75% tread left. And finally, alot of people use their streetbikes on the track, just don't push above what you feel comfortable.

Must get the huevos must get the huevos.....

Totally agree on your last sentence...For the past year I have been lugging around 800lbs worth of dead sexiness (my Harley not my ass!). I'm slowly getting back into the swing with the Kawi in terms of tossing it around but POOP!!! I Would soooo hate to have something happen playing on the track.

Just have confidence and more importantly ride at your own pace and don't push yourself. No need to drag your knee or anything.

We aren't all like you buddy have have brass balls lol. It's the truth some first timers get on the track and end up wiping out because they want to complete a better lap time or trying to get a knee down. I've seen it happen before as a matter of fact I've seen it happen at Jennings at a track day.

why don't you just rent leathers? this way you can see what you like before spending a lot of cash.

you can rent leathers from rhino leathers and they have them for sale also. check out their website.

Well, I am 5' 11" amd 220...XL in leathers would seem to fit me. I just need to find the time that I will be down there first! Definitely can't do it on momma's day. But after that I am sure I can.

If I put my knee down when riding my bike, the next post you would see is BRAT went down. Otherwise, my knee doesn't get anywhere near the ground. LOL
